"The Community Flower Garden" - A Collaborative Art Mural created at The Old Jerome High School, 2018
"The Community Flower Garden Art Pop-Up"
"The Community Flower Garden" was a free public arts event that was open to visitors of all ages. It was a one day "Art Pop-Up" held August 4th, 2018 at the Jerome Art Center in the Historic Mining Town of Jerome, AZ.
This creative and collaborative art experience was designed to engage visitors in multiple stations of "hands-on" intuitive art activities which culminated in the creation of a "Masking Tape Art Mural" symbolic of the concept of Growth and Community. The emphasis focused on the theraputic nature of art making and how the art experience can be enriched through group dynamics.
Types of art activities and mediums offered to participants included: drawing and sketching of flower images, flower icon creation through pin-back button making, and the opportunity for visitors to make their mark on the community mural by including themselves as a flower in a large, colorful, interactive art mural - conceptualized as a “Community Flower Garden". The project's slogan "Be a Flower" was the symbolic and creative prompt behind this Pop-Up, which was hosted and conceptualized by Visual Artist, Beth Courtright-Detwiler of Word is Art Studio. The mural was executed in the artist’s signature "masking-tape art" medium which used brightly saturated primary and secondary colored hand-painted masking tape. Art activities were designed to be open ended and participants were able to come and go freely during the day.
