The Garden "Icon" Series is a group of images that I have been working with to bring together a small inspired body of work to launch the theme of "The Community Flower Garden" pubilc mural event. Because of the simplistic, square composition of each image, it seemed natural to refer to them as icons.
For me, these little blossoms function differently than a narrative illustration or a still-life painting. I think of them as symbols which are meant to be absorbed on more of an unconscious level, perhaps reminicent of vague, yet brightly colored childhood memories, or ancient underground caves paintings or catacoms inscriptions, or space ships for that matter.
Neuroscience tells us that the unconscious mind does not process words, only pictures. For me, these icons are whimsical graphic designs. They are like deeper thoughts, or sudden startling ideas waiting to be decifered. . . entirely indicative of something more than their simplicity of shape, color and composition
